Description

Wood carving by Mario Sanchez depicting a street scene with many of his typical characters including the Chicken Thief and the police man, Buckteeth Bottle Swap Co with his balloons, Crawfish Jack, Jefferson B. Browne, Judge Hugh Gunn, and Pancho's Hot Bollos. Caption in file reads, 'Corner of Whitehead and Angela Streets looking north toward Duval Street. This carving depicts a scene of bygone days of Old Key West with Conch houses, vendors and pedestrians among which are two well known judges walking with canes on the sidewalk. Of the houses in the scene the only one that is still standing is the white house. The others were demolished, or moved to other lots. Notice the steeple of La Trinidad Methodist Church that was on Duval and Angela Streets'. Paper bag drawing to match 1987.01.3257
