Description

Civil War Letter written on February 4, 1863 aboard U.S. Barque Gemsbok stationed in Key West, Florida. It was written by William H. Hendrick to Miss Esther P. Goodspeed. Transcription of the letter is attached to this record. USS Gemsbok (1861) was a bark acquired by the Union Navy during the American Civil War. She was used by the navy as a gunboat, but, later in the war, she was also used as a collier and a storeship. The U.S.S. Gemsbok was part of the Union’s South Atlantic Blockade and the bombardment of Fort Macon and the incidents of the wreck of the transport Steamer Sanford and the Rebel steamer Alabama are well documented in various Official Records to include the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in War of the Rebellion.
