USS Gemsbok (1861) was a bark acquired by the Union Navy during the American Civil War. She was used by the navy as a gunboat, but, later in the war, she was also used as a collier and a storeship. The U.S.S. Gemsbok was part of the Union’s South Atlantic Blockade and the bombardment of Fort Macon and the incidents of the wreck of the transport Steamer Sanford and the Rebel steamer Alabama are well documented in various Official Records to include the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in War of the Rebellion.Collection
