Description

Wood carving by Mario Sanchez depicting two men rolling cigars. A small cigar factory was called a buckeye. Unfinished double-sided carving depicting a horse drawn carriage traveling in front of the Oldest House on Duval Street. Caption in file reads, 'Besides the large manufacturers of cigars in Key West, there were also buckeye cigar makers. They were small units, often 2 or 3 workers, operating in a private home. Like the large companies, buckeyes had permits fro the Internal Revenue Service. Most of them were successful in their ventures and moved to larger buildings, employing hundreds of cigar makers'.
