Description

Wood carving by Mario Sanchez depicting the Clyde Mallory Dock in Key West, Florida. People are fishing and diving off the docks or sitting waiting for boats to arrive. The Custom House, Hotel Panama and ticket booth are in background. The wood carving is two pieces of glued together with wood supports on verso. Caption written by Sanchez reads, 'The wooden dock on the Gulf of Mexico as it appeared in the 1920s has been replaced by one of cement. The yellow warehouse is no longer there, the space now a parking lot. The surrounding buildings comprise what is known as Mallory Square, named for Stephen R. Mallory, Secretary of the Confederate Navy, a United States senator, and land, the Collector of Customs at Key West. A bride and groom await passage, and divers retrieve coins dropped by tourists on board the incoming SS Comal. Most of the buildings at Mallory Square are in use today and are reminiscent of a working scene of the 1920s. 'In the background is the Florida First National Bank on Front Street with the American flag flying atop its cupola. The large, red brick building bordering the dock, formerly a warehouse, is used for civic events. The gray building is the Waterfront Playhouse, also formerly a warehouse. At the intersection of Front and Fitzpatric [sic] Streets, the two-story red brick building with a green porch on the second floor was a cigar factory. It is now a jewelry and gift shop, the 'Bird in Hand'. On the waterfront, the two square buildings were cisterns that supplied rain water to ships. And next door is the Coast Guard building with the American flag on top. The old red, brick Post Office Customs House is at far right.' Signed Mario print of the intaglio 1992.20.0006.
