The shell of an Atlantic green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas). This species has been considered threatened in the southern Atlantic since 1978. For centuries the turtle industry was vital to the economy of Key West until 1971 when the Endangered Species Act was passed and limits on the trade of sea turtles began.
