Description

Black and white photograph of a Florida East Coast Railway train on the tracks following the Labor Day Hurricane. Caption on verso, 'Upper Matecumbe Key after the hurricane that struck on Labor Day, 1935. This view shows the boxcar Wilbur Jones of Tallahassee, FL and other men were trapped in during the storm. The car was turned on its side by the storm surge blocking the only unlocked doors. The water filled the inside of the car and almost drowned them. After the water receded, they escaped by chopping out a ventilator with an ax (bottom middle of car's roof).'
