Passengers disembark from Pan Am's Dixie Clipper after its historic first transatlantic flight, from Port Washington near New York City to Lisbon on June 28-29, 1939. The luxurious Boeing 314 flying boat completed the trip in 24 hours, 15 minutes with a refueling stop in the Azores. It continued from Lisbon to Marseilles. In the 1970s, Pan Am's 747 Clippers crossed the Atlantic nonstop in little more than six hours. Pan American World Airways in 1977 celebrated its 50th Anniversary of international air service.
