Description

New York-Tokyo Nonstop Jumbo jet. The long-range 747SP (Special Performance) jumbo jet in the markings of Pan American World Airways. The 747SP had greater range than its sistership -- the standard 747--thus providing for the first time routine nonstop service on routes of nearly 7,000 miles or more: New York-Tokyo, New York-Bahrain, Sydney-San Francisco, and San Francisco-Auckland. Pan Am chose names with Bicentennial flavor for its six 747SPs: Clipper Liberty Bell, Clipper Mayflower, Clipper Constitution, Clipper Freedom, Clipper Great Republic, and Clipper Lindbergh. Pan American World Airways in 1977 celebrated its 50th Anniversary of international air service.
