Description

Postcard depicting a Mario Sanchez woodcarving of a trolley in front of the Custom House, Key West, Florida. The description on the verso reads, 'Mario Sanchez. "Round the Bend" - 1960 - Painted Woodcarving. This carving portrays a fine example of 19th century brick work in Key West. The building, built in 1891, was formerly the U.S. Post Office and Customs House, now located on the Naval Base (1965). It houses the Navy Industrial Relations Offices and is lovingly called "Old 91". Building on right, flying U.S. flag, was and still is U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters. Building on left, Number 48, was formerly Navy Shipping Department and is now Supply Storehouse. Monument in center of triangular area known as Clinton Square is in honor of the men from Key West Station who lost their lives during the Civil War. The street was bricked, and the street car is one of the Key West Electric Company's. This area of Key West has always been of particular interest to Mario Sanchez, Key West born primitive woodcarver and painter. His grandfather owned a coffee shop at left corner, and his father, a "lector" or "Reader" in the Gato and other cigar factories here, was born on the corner opposite Audubon House. Mario himself, at one time, was the shipping clerk in Building 48. Collection “El Kiosko”, Key West, Florida.’
