Description

Postcard depicting a Mario Sanchez piece of artwork - a tub of fish. The description on the verso reads, ‘Mario Sanchez. “Washtub with Grunts” - 1965 - Painted woodcarving. A typical Key West catch - yellow grunts - in the manner in which they were displayed on the Key West waterfront when the fishing fleet came into the docks, years ago. The many other grunts caught here are more prevalent, but the yellow are especially sought after by the local fishermen. Only at special spots can these be found and their favorite bait is a rock worm, in Spanish “calandraca”. With many families in Key West, the washtub is an indispensable piece of equipment today, even though nearly every family has its automatic clothes washer and dryer. Collection “El Kiosko”, Key West, Florida.’ The message on the verso reads, ‘Dearest Art, April 4, Air Mail, It just takes a little perspective to appreciate a good “kettle of fish”. I miss you all the time. With love and big hugs, Jeannie’. The card is addressed to Mr. O.A. Poirier, 210 Rockridge Road, San Carlos, California, 94070, and is postmarked Key West, May 9, 1971.
