Postcard depicting a Mario Sanchez woodcarving of people and businesses on a street. Signs on the buildings read, ‘Pancho Fleitas Cafe; Petronia Street Barber Shop, William Austin, Padr.; Zacarias, home of the Cuban sandwich’. The description on the verso reads, 'Mario Sanchez. "On with the Music" - 1964 - Painted Woodcarving. This gay scene depicts the jovial and frolicsome character of the Key Westers. One sees Zacaria's Sandwich Shop and Kiosko of an earlier day (corner Duval and Petronia Streets). This scene was on the Petronia Street side. Sons of the owner of the shop, with their affable and gleeful characters, had a gift of their own to draw people. Zacaria's was like the Cuban coffee shops... a place of reunion to discuss baseball, music, and everything of enjoyment. If an ambulant musical trio or quartet passed by, Zacaria's sons, or anyone visiting there, would invite the musicians to play their instruments. It the players played "good", everyone enjoyed it, and if they played "bad", enjoyed it more, as this gave grounds to make comments and jokes. Members of the gay Cuban colony in Key West spent many happy moments here with the beloved Zacaria and his family. Collection Charlotte Tonis and Florence Weil, New Hope, Pennsylvania.'Subject Place
