Postcard depicting a Mario Sanchez woodcarving of a streetcar passing a dance hall with signs that read, ‘1896 and Philbrick’s La Brisa Pavilion’. The description on the verso reads, 'Mario Sanchez. "La Brisa" - 1963 - Painted Woodcarving. "La Brisa" of another day! This amusement center or social hall known as "Mr. Philbrick's La Brisa Pavilion" was at the ocean end of Simonton's Street, now the site of the Sands Beach Club (1965). Built in 1896, La Brisa lost its domes and roof in a hurricane. (One dome forms the roof of a remodeled house on South Street, between Grinnell and Whalton Streets.) La Brisa was the social center in the gay 90s where townspeople gathered together for dancing and enjoying the ocean breeze. Tightly collared, but wearing cool white linen suits, the gentlemen with their ladies in ankle-length dresses danced at arms' length - then refreshed themselves with cool lime drinks. The Electric Company's street car barns were nearby. (Earlier cars were mule and horse-drawn). The lad, Manolo, carries a boat paddle and snapper fish.
