Postcard depicting a Mario Sanchez woodcarving of a trolley, horse and carriage, and people on a city street. Signs on the buildings read, ‘Island City Bank; Victoria’s Restaurant; Willard Johnson Fight, round by round, today at the Key West Citizen; Greene Street; Gato’s Cigars; Dewey’s Seafood Cuisine’. The description on the verso reads, 'Mario Sanchez. "Sleepy Downtown" - 1963 - Painted Woodcarving. Typical old Key West is represented here by the intersection of Greene Street and Duval (main) Street. Building at left can even today (1965) be recognized as Sloppy Joe's Bar. Other quaint buildings are today the site of gift shops and a saloon and farther along, for many years, this section of Greene Street was a carriage stand and later a taxi stand. This is around the corner from Pepe's Cafe (Duval Street), and down the block from Audubon House. The cigar store Indian was one of many that stood in front of Key West coffee houses and tobacco shops. The sailor indicates that this is a Navy town with an entrance to the Naval Base nearby on Greene Street. Collection "El Kiosko", Key West, Florida.'Subject Place
