Description

Postcard depicting a woodcut of a horse-drawn fire wagon in front of a government building. The description on the verso reads, ‘Old City Hall – by Mario Sanchez 1961 – Painted Woodcarving. This is Key West’s old City Hall at the corner of Ann and Greene Streets, opposite the Key West Citizen Newspaper. It is a quaint building, no longer wearing its crown where the bell which tolled for funerals, fires, and public events hung for many years. Left behind by time, even Fire Station #1 has moved to the new City Hall at Simonton and Angela Streets. At left, the Star Coffee Mill is one of two coffee roasting mills still operating in Key West (1965). The beautiful old City Hall gates may today be seen at the old Spanish Garden in historic Mallory Square, several blocks away. The stately Sam Goldsmith House, formerly the William Curry Home, is the tall dwelling in center (Ann and Caroline Streets). Collection “El Kiosko”, Key West, Florida.’ The message on the verso reads, ‘Same Card, 1, Darling, I’ve been signing your name to bills so often ___ it'll definitely ___ Our old Mr. Goodwin finished the moulding and __. __ remind him that he threatened not to be around - he was and did a good job. My thanks to you for coming over to see and oversee - only wish you could come to finish up. xxx J’. The card is addressed to Mr. O.A. Poirier, Fox Run Road, Norwalk, Connecticut, and is postmarked Key West, October 2, 1967.
