Description

Postcard depicting a Mario Sanchez woodcarving of people dancing and playing instruments in front of the Island Saloon. The description on the verso reads, 'Mario Sanchez. "Lucky Rooster" - 1962 - Painted Woodcarving. One of the most beautiful of the Sanchez Key West carvings depicts a secret cult, the Nanigos, performing its initiation ceremonies at corner of Whitehead and Petronia Streets. The "Nanigos" used a half-dead rooster in their rites, and should the person being initiated survive a konk on the head by the rooster, he could become a member of the cult. The red and white striped sticks are symbolical as are the green tree branches. Note the odd fringe at knees, ankles and waists of the hooded costumes; and the bongo drums and cornet used to produce Afro music. The colorful central buildings, with Solano family on balcony, has a Captain's Walk on roof. White dwelling with blue trim (left) is today (1965) beautifully maintained and is part of the Solano estate. Building center today houses Padron's Grocery. It was used in a scene of the movie "all Fall Down" (Novel by James Herlihy), portions of which were photographed here by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Director John F. Frankenhammer. In distance, at end of Petronia Street, is one of old Fort Zachary Taylor's mounted guns of yesteryear. Building (left) was Fonda Jazz Place. Private collection.'
