Description

Black and white photograph depicting Union artillery of the Army of the Potomac at the lower wharf in Yorktown, Virginia, following the Confederate evacuation of the city during the Peninsula Campaign. The image shows rows of Parrott rifles and smaller Coehorn mortars awaiting transport, with the masts of supply vessels visible in the background. A portion of the army wagon train can also be seen as equipment and artillery were prepared for shipment. The artillery accompanied Major General George B. McClellan's advance up the Virginia Peninsula and represented the extensive logistical resources of the Union army, which deployed hundreds of field guns during the campaign.
