"The Reader and the Cigar Makers" - 1963 - Painted Woodcarving. A section of the Gato Cigar Factory (now the site of the U.S. Navy Commissary), Simonton Street at Virginia, Key West, Florida. 1000 cigar makers worked here. The Reader was characteristic of the larger factories and would read to the cigar makers, as they worked, Spanish newspapers, classic novels, and the daily English-language newspapers which he would translate.
