Photograph of a June 22, 1918 certificate that reads: "The United States of America William C. Redfield Secretary of Commerce to all who shall see these presents greeting: Know ye that reposing special trust and confidence in the Integrity and Ability of William W. Demeritt I do appoint him Superintendent of Lighthouses and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfill the duties of that Office according to law and to have and to hold the said Office with all the powers, privileges, and emoluments thereunto of right appertaining subject to the conditions prescribed by law and rules promulgated thereunder. Given under my hand and the Seal of the Department of Commerce in the District of Columbia the twenty second day of June AD 1918 and of the Independence of the United States the one hundred and forty second".
