Postcard depicting a woman with a horseless carriage standing near a sign that reads, ‘End of the rainbow and end of the route, Key West, Florida, U.S. 1, unlimited opportunities, tropical vacationland.’ The caption reads, ‘Official Historical Commemorative, Key West horseless carriage traveling 2,209 miles from Fort Kent, Maine, to Key West, Florida. August, 1972. From all of us at the “end of the rainbow”, we bid you “welcome” Josette Richard, driver of historic trip and official ambassador of good will of the city of Key West, Florida’. The description on the verso reads, ‘Fort Kent, Maine, northern terminus of historical Route 1, settled 1829, population 4,787, altitude 530 feet, zip code 04743. Golden anniversary (1972) of historic Route 1, completed in 1922, linking Key West, Florida to the mainland and ending in Fort Kent, Maine. Key West, Florida, sesquicentennial year 1822-1972, population 33,956, altitude 5 feet, zip code 33040’. The card is postmarked Fort Kent, Maine, August 7, 1972, and Key West, August 31, 1972.
