Description

Black and white photograph depicting ammunition stored within Union Fort No. 9 at Atlanta, Georgia, during the American Civil War. The view looks northwest toward Union Forts Nos. 8 and 7 while Union forces under General William T. Sherman occupied the city prior to the March to the Sea in late 1864. Canvas powder charge bags are arranged along the parapet near the embrasures, an exposed placement that suggests the fort was no longer under immediate threat of Confederate assault. The bags are marked '12 Pdr. Model 1857,' identifying them as powder charges for the Model 1857 12-pounder 'Napoleon,' the most widely used smooth-bore field artillery piece in Union service.
