Wood carving by Mario Sanchez depicting a traditional funeral procession traveling along Center Street between Petronia and Olivia streets, passing in front of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Key West. The procession is led by a horse-drawn hearse, followed by mourners and the Welters Cornet Band, as it makes its way to the Key West Cemetery.
The scene commemorates the passing of a local fisherman, Mr. Salinier, and reflects the funeral traditions of Key West during the 1940s. Sanchez intentionally depicted the lodge members and the Welters Cornet Band in attire characteristic of the 1930s, illustrating an earlier period's ceremonial dress. The mourners' clothing represents the fraternal lodge to which Mr. Salinier belonged.
Among the musicians is Manuel Gutierrez, known as 'Baby,' portrayed as the band's small clarinetist. In addition to playing clarinet, Gutierrez was a violinist and respected local music teacher.Type of Sculpture
