Description

Black and white stereoview of Morro Castle in Havana, Cuba. Caption on verso, 'When winter holds reign in cold and sleety northern cities, then it is 'summertime, ahoy!' in the green isles of the Caribbean, wintering places of a large number of people from Europe and temperate North America. And Havana leads as the gayest of winter capitals. There are few harbors more picturesque and it is large enough so that all the navies of the world could ride at anchor. 'Approaching from the sea, Morro Castle, on a narrow tongue of land at our left, stands out against a cloud-flecked tropical blue sky. Beyond, in the distance, is Havana; beautiful in its coloring of soft creamy white, ivory and buff splashed here and there with spots of more brilliant hues. 'Discovered more than four hundred years ago, in 1508, by Sebastian de Ocampo, eleven years later Diego de Valasquez, Cuba's first governor, founded a city on Havana Harbor. In 1538, Havana was sacked and burned by pirates and again in 1555. In 1585, it was attacked by Sir Francis Drake who was repulsed. It was after this experience that the fort El Morro was erected on the east with La Punta on the west to guard the city. Later, several times attacked by the Dutch, and in 1762, held for a year by the English, it was freed from Spain with Cuba became independent. In the Twentieth Century we see it a city rich in art and culture and a lure for thousands of winter travelers.'
