Peter Crusoe (1823-1873) was born in Gibraltar and served as the Key West Clerk of the Court during the decade leading up to the Civil War. When the war broke out, Crusoe was among the civic leaders that sympathized with the South and opposed Northern rule. Crusoe refused to take an oath of office and was forced off the island. His family members remained in Key West, and his great-great grandson was the harbor pilot Edwin Crusoe.
