German submarine emergency escape breathing apparatus, commonly known as a Tauchretter. The apparatus consists of an orange waterproof canvas breathing harness marked with the number '1' in yellow, a small green oxygen cylinder, and an olive-green rubber face mask. The breathing system was designed to provide emergency breathing gas to submariners escaping from a disabled or sunken U-boat. The apparatus incorporates a carbon dioxide absorption system to remove carbon dioxide from exhaled air and permit rebreathing during underwater ascent. Manufactured for German submarine service by companies including Dräger.
