Civil WarDescription
Carte-de-visite portrait of Sereno Lewis Bishop (1843–1923), age 20, a Private in the 110th New York Infantry Regiment, United States Army, during the American Civil War. Bishop served with his regiment at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas from 1864 to 1865, where Union troops garrisoned the strategically important coastal fortress and military prison.
The photograph was produced by Duncan Moffat at Moffatt Studios on Duval Street, Key West, making it a significant example of Civil War-era photography from the southernmost Union outpost. The sitter is depicted in Union military uniform.
The verso bears a canceled United States two-cent Revenue Tax stamp, indicating payment of the federal tax levied on photographs under the Internal Revenue Acts during the Civil War.Photograph Details
