Description

US Navy submarine escape apparatus consisting of an orange rubberized fabric inflatable vest, hood, plastic face plate, and attached compressed-air cylinder. Designed by Lieutenant Harris Steinke in 1961, the Steinke Escape Hood was developed to provide submariners with breathing air and buoyancy during an emergency escape from a disabled or sunken submarine. The Steinke hood replaced the earlier Momsen Lung as a U.S. Navy submarine escape device during the 1960s.
