Painting: Oil on canvas. Portrait of John Alsop King. Three-quarter view of a middle-aged Mr. King. He is wearing a dark/black coat and vest with a white shirt and dark/black cravat. He is also wearing thin, gold rimmed spectacles and has greyish/white, wispy hair.
Frame: Large, wooden frame with gold leaf and oval opening. Frame is ornate and has applied gesso decoration of leafy vine with holly-like berries. There are also four corner and central cartouches around an oval opening.
John Alsop King was the eldest son of Rufus King. John was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1840 (age 52), served in Congress in 1849 (age 61) and served as Governor of New York 1857-59 (age 69).Collection
