Portrait of Girl with JewelryEntry/Object ID
x1997.23-1,2Description
Painting: Oil on canvas. Portrait of young woman, elegantly dressed. Her gown may be dark blue/green or black. The woman has an elaborate hairstyle and what appears to be a comb. She is also wearing a lot of plain, gold jewelry. She has two gold necklaces, one with a heart pendant from which hangs a cross. A longer gold chain is looped around her neck and attached to her skirt. She is also wearing long, hollow, elongated diamond shaped earrings and a hollow bead shaped brooch is pinned to the front of her bodice, which has a wide, open neckline. She also has two rings, one plain gold band and one rectangular in shape with semi-precious stones and perhaps a lock of hair in the center; it may be a memento mori ring. Her gown has a pointed bodice, low sleeves that begin tight and balloon out at about the elbow. She is sitting on a chair which has a rolled back edge. There is only a greenish/grey backdrop.
May be Martha Seaman or Leah Simonson (portraits donated by Mrs. Rosa M. Fleury in 1914)
Frame: Wide, wood, gold leaf frame with gesso ornamentation applied onto frame. Elaborate, leaf/vine motif in gold. Frame has textured feel, as if net/tulle were placed over gesso and painted.Collection
