Description

Cast iron, built-in "closed" range stove, fuelled by coal. It has two ovens and a closed grate. There are five circular openings on top with a built-in waffle maker (different maker) and a cast iron shelf, with large holes in it, above the oven. On front of grate it says: "Beebe Range No. 1." Below it says: "Janes & Kirtland." William Beebe received a patent for this stove on July 8, 1842. It was a brick-set or set-in range, made to fit into old fireplaces. By the 1880s, the Beebe Range claimed to be the oldest brick-set range. Burning anthracite coal, it took between 24-28 minutes to raise 10lbs (one Imperial gallon or 1.2 US gallons) of water to a boil in a standard copper pan.
