Description

Painted wood plank stool with planked sides ending in upside down v. Tag "Pupil stool used in Union Hall Academy/Loaned through the courtesy of the Jamaica Village Society" Note: paper label with typewritten words pasted underneath stool. "These two stools [x1993.223 & x1996.68] were presented by Mr. John L. Spader/on November 28, 1996./Mr. Spader informed me that they had been brought to his residence from Union Hall Academy Building at the time the /building was re-modeled, about 1873-75./Undoubtedly they had been used at the Academy a long time/ago as indicated by the wear they show. The initials carved on the short one [x1993.223] are probably those of some pupil who used it in the old days./ The taller one [x1996.68] probably was used by the late Henry Onderdonk/Jr., who for many years was Vice-Principal of the Academy, and /whom the older citizens of Jamaica may remember. The good old/man was obliged to wear a cork leg which did not bend at the knee,/and this stool was probably designed for his conven-ience./ I am now presenting them to the Jamaica Village Society to be/kept by the society as mementos of the good old times in Jamaica,/ with their kind permission, until such time as the Jamaica Village/may have a place for the care and preservation of such articles./Dated February 13, 1917. signed William A.
