Letter written from Dudley P. Allen to Kinsman Library Association from July 10, 1914. Allen is offering a donation of selected pictures form his collection to furnish the library.
Kinsman Library Association,
Kinsman O.,
Gentleman;
As we are changing our residence in Cleveland we have found that we cannot hang all our pictures in the new house. I have, therefore selected certain pictures to be sent to you, sending the same type as those you already have. I intended that a list of them should have been made before they were sent, but the were forwarded before I knew that they had gone, so that I am making the present list from memory and it may not be wholly accurate.
There were two pictures of Greek sculpture, one the head of Jupiter and the other of Juno. I selected these originally because they are generally considered the finest marbles of these heads which exist.
There is a Madonna by Raphael, called the Del Gan Duca. The child’s head is a detail from a larger picture, (A Madonna, I think also by Raphael.)
There are photographs of two tombs. These are now in the museum at Constantinople, and the most beautiful is supposed to be the tomb of Alexander the Great. There is a head of Dante by Giotto which is from a fresco on the wall of the Bargello in Florence. This was at on time painted over by another picture, but this covering was later removed.
There is also a photograph of the Duomo in Florence.
I am sorry that I cannot send you a better statement concerning the pictures.
Hoping that the Library is prospered, I am,
Very sincerely yours,
Dudley P. Allen
