1970sDescription
Actors in costume identified from right to left as "Ralph McIntosh, Arthur Vogel, Gary Holsinger twins, Gene Goss, Alfred Mathews, Ron Jewell." Ralph McIntosh is the "Drill Master", and the rest are "Recruits" in the Kinsman Sesquicentennial Play in July 1970.
This re-enactment depicts the historic event described as, "When war was declared in 1812, this area was sparsely settled and very vulnerable. Colonel Richard Hayes from Hartford was directed to assemble recruits at Kinsman's Store (which stood about where Market Square is now) on August 24. They came from Hubbard, Vernon, Brookfield, Vienna, Kinsman, Williamsfield, Gustavus, Wayne, Johnson, and Fowler. Some had common hunting rifles with powder horn and bullet pouch, others old arms from former wars and some only pikes and hay forks. Flint, powder and lead were bought, bullets run, arms tested by firing at marks. Altogether it was such a scene of noise and confusion, excitement and activity, as had not been witnessed before in the village, and probably has not been since!".Cataloged By
