Description

Rounded terracotta water jug with raised red and white floral motif. The jug has a small stand, rounded middle, and long thin neck. The rounded bowl and long neck water container from Pakistan is called a surahi. It is kept on a stand made of bricks or wood inside during the day, and outside at night. It used to be part of a travelers luggage, which made the small circular stand a necessity.

Context

The terracotta jug was given to the Jordans by the President of Pakistan, Mohammad Ayub Khan, in 1959. They were en route to Lahore, a large city in Pakistan. Khan served as the second president of Pakistan from 1958 to 1969. He also served as first chief martial law administrator from 1958 to 1962 and the third commander-in-chief of the Pakistan Army from 1951 to 1958. He resigned from the presidency in 1969 following widespread protests. He remains the country's longest-serving president and second-longest serving head of state. The decade of his work is often referred to as the "Decade of Development," and he is credited with increasing economic prosperity and industrialization.
