Description

Silver casket humidor on silver pedestal. On top is a Kuwaiti dhow with LTJ initials enameled on the front. The casket humidor depicts scenes of Kuwaiti oil operations with a miniature dhow on the top and falcons as the legs. The dhow represents the connection of the Kuwaiti people to the sea and the falcon represents the country’s desert lifestyle and traditions. Together, both of these objects can be found on the Kuwaiti crest. Additionally, the box containing the book with signatures is engraved with “L.T. Jordan K.B.E. from his friends and colleagues in the Kuwait Oil Company Ltd. 1948-1961.” In the inscription, the spacing is wrong between the “n” of Jordan and the “K” of K.B.E. This is because the humidor was originally made before Mr. Jordan was knighted and read C.B.E., the silversmith had to make the “C” into a “K” and thus the spacing is off. The same correction can be seen on the outside of the large blue book with signatures.

Context

The silver humidor and accompanying book were given to Mr. L.T. Jordan by members of the Kuwait Oil Company upon his retirement in 1962. The humidor was made in London, England.
