Description

Set of four ceramic ashtrays painted with traditional Israeli colors and patterns. Three of them are inscribed with "JERUSALEM" and were likely made/purchased there. The motifs painted on the ashtrays are consistent with other folk art from the Middle East made during the mid-20th century.

Context

Mr. and Mrs. Jordan were given the trays when visiting a ruler at his palace in Bombay (now Mumbai). Bombay was changed to Mumbai in November 1955 after the Marathi nationalist Shiv Sena Party won Maharashtra state elections. They insisted that “Bombay” was a corrupt English version of “Mumbai” and was an unwanted reminder of British colonial rule.
