Stainless steel and brass brazier with gold floral and stone appliques, studded with genuine jewels.

Context

The brazier was gifted to the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah III Al-Salim Al-Sabah during a state visit to China from Mao Tse-Tung, also known as Mao Zedong (westernized version). Sheikh Sabah III Al-Salim Al-Sabah ruled Kuwait from 1965-1977. He is the 12th ruler in his family’s dynasty and held positions such as President of the Police Directorate, President of the Public Heath Department, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Prime Minister of Kuwait before assuming the throne. Mao Tse-Tung was the Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party from 1943-1976. He supported Chinese nationalism and had an anti-imperialist outlook during the early parts of his life. He later became a founding member of the Chinese Communist Party and Chinese Red Army during the Chinese Civil War from 1927-1950. The brazier was later regifted to Mrs. Jessie Jordan by the Sheikh right before his death in 1977.
