Description

Carved wooden seated cockfighter with cock figurine. The carved wooden figurines depict a Balinese cockfighter preparing for a fight. The fights are traditionally part of the Bali Hindu religion, in which certain ceremonies required a blood sacrifice, and while the fights are forbidden for non-religious purposes, they still occur often in every Balinese village. The figurine appears to be part of a pair and was made in the Klungkung Regency of Indonesia. Klungkung Regency is the smallest regency in Bali, with regency referring to an administrative division under a province and on the same level as cities.

Context

The Jordans travelled to Bali many times, and this was likely picked up during one of their trips.
