Description

Jill Ruckelshaus and Zsa Zsa Gabor, 1976. These two black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show two women (Jill Ruckelshaus and Zsa Zsa Gabor) and one unknown man individually speaking to a crowd from a podium which appears to be on the on the steps of the Washington State Capitol Building in Olympia, Washington. Image 14 shows Jill Ruckelshaus wearing a jacket with a large plaid pattern and speaking behind a podium. She is facing the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 15 is similar to the previous image, but here Ms. Ruehelhaus is facing the in the general direction of the camera. Image 16 shows Zsa Zsa Gabor wearing a dress with a fur hem. To Ms. Gabor's left is a man who is gesturing in the general direction of the camera with his left hand. In his left hand are what appear to be one or more paper documents. Image 16 shows Ms. Gabor bending down and placing her hands on the sides of the head of a child. Image 18 shows Ms. Gabor speaking from behind the podium. Her left hand is resting on the edge of the podium and she is wearing a button which reads "FORD" and "DOLE." Image 19 is similar to image 18, but here Ms. Gabor is looking toward her right and downward slightly. Image 20 shows a section of the crowd watching the speakers. Near the center of the image is an older man in a plaid jacket standing and taking a picture. Image 21 shows a police or state patrol officer standing on a narrow walkway just below the roofline of the Capitol building. Image 22 shows an older man wearing a hat with the number 3100 on the front speaking from behind the podium. Image 23 is very similar to the previous image, but here the man's eyes are closed. Jill Ruckelshaus was a liberal Republican political operative and wife of William Ruckelshaus, who served in Richard Nixon's cabinet. Zsa Zsa Gabor was a Hungarian-born actress. The buttons worn by Ms. Ruckelshaus and Ms. Gabor suggest that the event shown in these images is a rally for 1976 Republican presidential candidate Gerald Ford and his running mate Bob Dole. Printed in alternation along the right-hand side of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
