Description

Betty Ford and Dan Evans, 1976, These six black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, the strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each of these groups will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show two men (Dan Evans and an unknown man) and one woman (Betty Ford) individually speaking from behind a podium on what appear to be the front steps of the Washington State Capitol Building. The event depicted appears to be a rally in support of Republican presidential candidate Gerald Ford and his vice presidential candidate Bob Dole. Image 24a shows an older man in a suit speaking from behind the podium. He is wearing a military-style hat which reads "3100" across the front. He is also gesturing with his left hand. Image 25a is similar to the previous image, but here the man has turned toward his right, making his face visible in profile. The side of his hat reads "Eastside Barracks Past Commander." Image 26a shows a woman (Betty Ford) waving with her right hand. She is amongst several men in suits. In the near foreground is a person facing directly away from the camera. This person is blurred. Image 27a shows Mrs. Ford standing behind the podium and smiling and looking downward slightly. A woman wearing two necklaces is standing to the right of Mrs. Ford. Image 28a shows Mrs. Ford in profile and facing toward the left-hand side of the image. Dan Evans is also shown in profile and facing toward the left-hand side of the image. Image 29a shows Mrs. Ford with her right arm extended straight up into the air. She is smiling. Image 30a is very similar to the previous image, but here Mrs. Ford's arm is bent at the elbow. The right-hand half of image 31a is blank. Image 42a shows Mrs. Ford standing behind the podium and holding a bouquet of flowers. There also appears to be a stuffed animal toy wearing a beret on the podium. Image 43a shows Dan Evans standing behind the podium. He is looking directly toward the camera and his mouth is open slightly. Image 44a shows Mrs. Ford at center and Mr. Evans at left. At right is a woman who appears to be presenting a plaque to Mrs. Ford. Image 1a shows Mrs. Ford standing behind the podium and smiling. She is visible in the top left quadrant of the image. A person's hands in mid-clap are visible in the top right quadrant of the image. Image 2 shows Mrs. Ford standing behind the podium and laughing. Image 3a is similar to the previous image, but here Mrs. Ford appears to be looking directly toward the camera. Image 4a is similar to the previous image, but here Mrs. Ford is speaking into the microphone mounted on the podium. Her left hand is resting on the edge of the podium. Image 5a shows Mrs. Ford spreaking from behind the podium, but here the photographer has zoomed out significantly. Mrs. Ford is visible from head to toe, and there is a very large group of balloons visible to the left of Mrs. Ford. Image 6a through 8a are nearly identical to image 5a. Image 9a shows Mrs. Ford holding the hand of a man who is facing away from the camera and wearing a suit and tie. A bracelet on Mrs. Ford's right wrist is visible, and the letters "A" and "M" are visible on it. Image 10a shows the back of Mrs. Ford's head. Visible near the center of the image is a woman taking a photo of Mrs. Ford. Image 11a shows a man leading a llama across a road. A woman in a jacket is reaching out to touch the llama. Image 12a shows the man leading the llama away from the camera. The images in group "b" show a man holding two signs talking to people in the crowd at the rally, a part of the crowd at the rally, and a blurred image of a forearm and hand. Image 9b shows a man in a suit standing in a walkway which goes past the crowd at the rally. He is facing away from the camera and appears to be speaking to some children in the front row. He is also holding two signs which support the Ford/Dole presidential ticket. Image 10b shows the man as he turns away from the children. He appears the be holding a wood slat in his left hand. Image 11b shows the man entering a walkway which goes through the crowd. Image 12b shows a portion of the crowd at the rally. Several signs are visible, one of which reads "Vote 'No' for President '76". Image 13b shows a blurred forearm and hand. Betty Ford was a first lady of the United States and the wife of US President Gerald Ford. Dan Evans was a governor of Washignton State. Printed in alternation along one long edge of all of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
