Description

Sewage Controversy, 1973. These three black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a field of tall grass, a man seated on a wooden chair on a porch, and the same man wearing a a hardhat and sitting in the driver's seat of a tractor. These images were likely captured for inclusion with an article concerning sewage dumping in Thurston County. The man seen in these images may be Wesley Smith, a farmer whose land sewage was being dumped on. Image 29 shows a large grassy field surrounded by trees. Images 30 and 31 are nearly identical to image 29. Image 36 shows an older man seated in a wooden chair on a porch. A brick wall is partially visible behind him. The man is leaning forward in his chair. Image 37 is very similar to the previous image, but here the man is leaning back in the chair. Image 38 shows the man from the previous two images seated in the driver's seat of a tractor. The man is seated with his right arm turned toward the tractor's steering wheel. Image 39 is similar to the previous image, but here the man has his hands folded on top of the steering wheel. Image 40 is nearly identical to image 39. Image 41 is similar to the previous two images, but here the man's hands are folded together near the bottom of the steering wheel. Printed in alternation along one long edge of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
