Demonstration Against Governor Dixy Lee Ray, 1978. These three black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a small crowd of people holding protest signs outside of the Daily Olympian building. This building appears to be that which housed the Olympian newspaper located at 111 Bethel Street Northeast in Olympia, Washington. Image 27 shows approximately 12 people standing or seated on a sidewalk. Six people are holding protest signs. Three of the signs are readable in this images. These read, from left to right: "DIXIE DON.T CARE ABOUT OUR CHILD!." "DIXIE HURT's THE LOW-INCOME PEOPLE," and "RICH VS POOR (LETS TRADE PLACES)." A hatchback car is parked in an elevated area in the image background. The car occupies the top-right corner of the image. Image 28 shows the same group of people on the sidewalk. The back half of a car is visible passing by the crowd in the image foreground. A sign held by the leftmost person visible in the image reads "DIXIE, WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE TO WORRY WE PAY YOUR MEAL". Image 29 shows the same crowd on the sidewalk, but now there are approximately seventeen people present. Two signs are visible near the right-hand side of the image. These read: WHERE ARE THE JOBS, DIXIE" and "YOU VALUE ANIMALS MORE THAN PEOPLE". The leftmost person visible is a woman facing away from the camera and holding a folded-up blanket or large towel. Image 30 is very similar to image 29. Here the leftmost visible person is a man with a mustache wearing a plaid shirt. Image 31 shows the crowd, but here the photographer has moved near to the sidewalk. Here the leftmost visible person is a young woman holding a sign which reads "EAT THE RICH SPIT THE POOR". Image 32 shows a shot taken from within the crowd of protesters. At the center of the image is a balding man with glasses who is facing away from the camera. Image 33 shows another shot from within the crowd. A woman holding a small child is occupying the bottom left quadrant of the image. An evergreen tree is occupying the top right corner of the image. Image 34 shows two small children seated on the grass next to the sidewalk. The child on the left is holding a sign which reads "WHERE ARE THE JOBS, DIXIE". The child on the right is holding a sign which reads "AND NO JOBS". This image is oriented horizontally. Image 35 is nearly identical to image 34, but here the image is oriented vertically.Made/Created
