Description

Tumwater High School Play: The Taming of the Shrew, Unknown Date. These three black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a scene from a Tumwater High School production of the William Shakespeare play "The Taming of the Shrew." A woman in a Renaissance-style costume dress is at the left and a bearded man in a belted tunic is at right. The man appears to be wearing 1970s-era blue jeans and boots. A curtain serves as the backdrop for all of the images. Image 18 shows the man grabbing both of the woman's hands, and the woman appearing to pull back. The woman's hair obscures her face, aside from her nose and mouth. Only the left side of the man's face is visible. Image 19 shows the woman pulled in close to the man. She appears to be struggling against him. Image 20 shows the man having picked the woman up. He is holding her over his right shoulder, and he is facing toward the left-hand side of the image. Image 21 is very similar to image 20, but here the man is turning his head back toward the camera. Image 22 shows the woman and the man bending forward and touching their foreheads together. Both the man and the woman have their hands on their hips. Image 23 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 24 is very similar to the previous two images, but here the photographer has zoomed in on the man and woman. The top of the stage curtain is visible near the top of the image. Image 25 shows the man and woman standing with their faces still very close together. The man's right hand is reaching across his body to either grab or bat away the woman's right hand, which is raised. Both people's faces are obscured by their arms or hands. Image 26 shows the woman having just slapped the man. The man's head is turned far to his right and directly away from the camera. The woman's body is turned toward her left, but her face is still oriented toward the man. Image 27 shows the woman with her hand raised again. The hand is blurred, showing movement. The man is striking a heroic pose. His right arm is reaching across his middle. Image 28 shows the woman sitting on the floor and looking up toward the man. The man is leaning forward and reaching down toward the woman. Image 29 shows the woman still sitting on the floor and looking up toward the man, but here the woman appears to be laughing. The man is bent over and reaching downward with both arms. Image 30 shows the man sitting on the ground. The woman is crawling on all fours toward the man. The appears to be speaking to the man. Image 31 is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman is closer to the man and her mouth is open only slightly.
