1978 Lakefair with Goodyear Blimp, 1978. These five black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, the strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show people at the 1978 Lakefair carnival. Image 35a shows the Washington State Capitol building in the far distance. The upper 3/4 of the image is occupied by sky. Image 36a shows a child preparing to throw a softball at three milk bottles stacked in a pyramid. A second child, who is holding a beverage cup in their right hand, is bending down and reaching toward the stacked milk bottles. A man with a mustache and wearing a vest is watching from the background. Behind the man is a wall with many stuffed animals attached to it. Image 37a shows a young man hunched over slightly in front of a wall with many balloons attached to it. This game involves throwing darts to try and pop the balloons. A person's very blurry face is partially visible at the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 38a shows the young man working at the dart-throw game in the background. Nearer to the camera is a woman in a jacket with two large stars on the front facing toward the camera and smiling. Image 39a shows a young man having just released a ping-pong ball tossed toward many small fish bowls. The young man is kneeling on the game stall's counter. Several people are visible behind the young man. Image 40a shows children and a clown riding a merry-go-round. Image 41a shows a child, an adult and a different clown riding the merry-go-round. Image 42a shows several cages containing birds, hamsters, and perhaps other small pets. Image 43a shows a person with long hair riding in one of the seats of a carnival ride. The person is facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame and their hair is flying around in the air. Image 44a shows two young people riding together in one of the seats of the same carnival ride seen in the previous image. Here the two people are facing toward the camera. Image 1a shows a young person in a jumpsuit climbing a very wide rope ladder. They are facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. A man in a plaid shirt is visible in the background climbing up the same ladder. Image 2a shows the person in the jumpsuit from the previous image stepping or falling off of the rope ladder. Several people are visible in the background. Image 3a shows a sign describing how to win the rope ladder game being played in the previous two images. Image 4a shows people riding a ferris wheel. A sign reading "RAINIER" is visible near the bottom of the image. Image 5a shows a person bending over and hitting a pad with a long hammer (the hammer is obscured behind a rope with small penant-shaped flags attached to it). This person is playing "high striker" carnival game, which is a test of strength. Image 6a shows people riding two spinning carnival rides. Image 7a shows a target-shooting game stall. Two cards are each attached to their own cord, which extends forward and out of the image frame. There are many tiny holes in the cards. Image 8a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 9a shows a very elevated shot of the carnival. Here it can be seen that the carnival took place next to a lake. This lake appears to be Capital Lake. The carnival extends out of the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 10a is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has panned to their right slightly. Image 11a is nearly identical to image 9a.
The images in group "b" show a horse-drawn vehicle in a parade and the Goodyear Blimp. Image 4b shows the Goodyear Blimp flying. The blimp is quite small in this image. A portion of a building is occupying the bottom-left corner of the image. Image 5b is similar to the previous image, but here the blimp is even smaller and he building is not visible in the image. Image 6b shows a horse drawing a carriage in a parade. This image is extremely overexposed.Made/Created
