2007-012.C405PDescription
Forests and Brush Burning, 1978. These nine black and white contat print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show various wooded and lake scenes, some of which show a dragline excavator. Image 2a shows a clearcut area surrounded by a wooded area. In the distance a dragline excavator is visible next to a burning pile of wood brush. There are no apparent stumps visible in this clearcut area. Image 3a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 4a shows a closer-up view of the excavator next to the burning pile of brush. A very tall evergreen tree is extending above all of the surrounding trees near the left-hand edge of the image frame. This tree extends beyond the top edge of the image frame. The excavator's boom is pointing toward the top-right corner of the image. An operator is visible in the cab of the excavator. Image 5a shows the excavator, but here the photographer has zoomed in even more closely to the excavator. The control cab of the excavator is near the center-bottom of the image. The excavator's boom extends beyond the right-hand edge of the image frame. This images is oriented vertically. Image 6a is nearly identical to image 5a. Image 7a is very similar to the previous two images, but this image is oriented horizontally. The excavator's scoop is visible hanging above the burning pile of brush. The excavator's control cab is on the left-hand side of the image frame and the burning pile of brush is on the right. Image 8a is very similar to image 7a, but here the photographer has panned to the right slightly. The excavator's control cab is in the lower-right corner of the image. Image 9a is similar to the previous image, but the photographer has moved to their right. The excavator's scoop is on top of the pile of brush. Image 10a is very similar to image 9a, but here the image is oriented vertically. The excavator's scoop is hanging several feet above the pile of brush, and the scoop is open. Image 11a is very similar to the previous image, but here the excavator's scoop is on top of the pile of brush. Image 12a is very similar to image 10a, but here the scoop is closed an dirt is falling out of it. Image 13a shows a large cleared area surrounded by woods. In the distance the excavator is visible. The sky occupies the top 3/5 of the image. Image 14a shows the trunk of a large red cedar tree on the left-hand side of the image, and a large fern and other smaller plants on the right. Dense vegetation is visible in the background. Images 15a and 16a are nearly identical to image 14a. Image 17a shows a fairly close-up shot of a small maple branch with four leaves attached. Blurred vegetation is visible behind the leaves. Image 18a shows several wooden picnic tables and a metal ngarbage can in a small clearing in a forest. The ground occupies the bottom 1/5 of the image, and trees occupy the top 4/5 of the image. Image 19a is nearly identical to image 18a. Image 20a shows a heart painted on, or potentially carved into, the bark of a tree. Within the heart, there is one blob-shaped marking at the top-left, and another at the bottom. A number 7 is in the upper-right corner of the heart. This image is oriented vertically. Image 22a is very similar to the previous image, but here it is oriented horizontally. Image 23a shows a fern and other low-lying plants in the bottom half of the image frame. A maple branch and maple leaves occupy the upper half of the image. Image 24a shows a path through a wooded area. The woods consist mostly of cedars and maples. Image 25a is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has advanced farther down the path. Image 26a is very similar to the previous image, but here two children in bathing suits are standing on the path and facing away from the camera. Image 27a is nearly identical to image 26a.
The images in group "b" show wooded areas, some of which have power lines passing through them. Image 38b shows a large open area with densely-packed, large evergreen trees on the far side. A tall, narrow, silo-like structure is near the right-hand edge of the image. This structure may be a water tower. A car is parked next to the silo, and there is a home or other building partially visible at the right-hand edge of the image frame. Image 39b shows a wooded area off to the side of a road. The road is visible at the very bottom of the image. There are power lines and power poles on the right-hand half of the image, and two stabilizing cables extend from the top of the power poles downward and to the left to the ground. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 40b shows the same scene as the previous image, but here the image is oriented vertically. More of the road is visible in this image than in the previous. Images 41b, 42b and 43b are nearly identical to image 39b. Image 44b shows a primitive road passing through a densely wooded area. A cable or rope passes through the image in the foreground, and it is attached to a post which is partially visible at the right-hand edge of the image. A padlock is visible on the cable near to the post. A Rainier beer bottle is visible laying on its side on the road. This image is oriented vertically. Image 1b shows the same scene as the previous image, but here the image is oriented horizontally. The post is now fully visible in the image. Image 2b is very similar to image 44b, but here the photographer has moved past the rope or cable crossing the road. The beer bottle is visible near the bottom of the image, but the bottle is turned around so the label is not visible. Images 3b through 5b are nearly identical to image 2b.Made/Created
