Sports, 1978. These three black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show a woman at left and man at right practicing tennis serves. The woman appears to be instructing the man, and both the man and woman are facing away from the camera. Also shown are two Kaiser-Frazer automobiles. Image 36a shows the woman watching the man perform a tennis serve. The ball is visible in the air approximately three feet above the man's head, and he is reaching up to hit the ball with his racket. There is a plastic bucket at the man's feet. The woman is holding her racket in her right hand, and her right is on her hip. Image 37a shows the woman demonstrating a tennis form while the man watched. The woman is holding her racket out in front of her at approximately waist height. The man is holding his racket near to his chest. Image 38a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man is holding his racket out to his right while still watching the woman. Image 39a is very similar to image 38a, but here the man is holding the racket less toward his right and more forward. Image 40a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man is holding his racket out toward his left. Image 41a shows the man again practicing a serve. The ball is approximately four and a half feet above his head. His racket is held back over his head as he prepares for the serve. Image 42a shows the man serving again. He is standing on the balls of his feet, and the racket is held behind his head. The woman is watching the man and holding her racket out behind her. Image 43a shows the man having just released the ball into the air in preparation to serve. The ball is partially visible behind his racket. The woman is holding her racket toward the ground, and her head is tipped downward slightly. Image 44a shows a portion of a net, presumably the net at the tennis court where the previous eight images were captured. Image 1a shows two Kaiser-Frazer automobiles parked on a lawn. The cars are parked next to eachother, and the front ends of the cars are closer together than the back ends.
The images in group "b" show someone kicking a soccer ball, a child seated on a grassy lawn, and four women seated at a picnic table. Image 32b shows the feet and lower calves of someone having just kicked a soccer ball. The ball can be seen near the top-right corner of the image, and the person's right foot is still off of the ground following the kick. Image 33b is similar to the previous image, but here it appears the person's foot is traveling toward the soccer ball to kick it. The person's left foot is obscured behind their right foot. Image 34b shows a child in shorts and a horizontally-striped shirt sitting on a grassy lawn with their legs out straight in front of them. The child's legs below the knee are outside the bottom edge of the image frame. Image 35b shows three women seated on top of a picnic table and one woman sitting on one of the picnic table's seats. Another person is partially visible sitting on the ground in the bottom-right corner of the image. A soccer ball is visible next to this person. A tree and a lake or pond are visible in the background.Made/Created
