Description

Lacey Funeral Home Open House, 1973. These two black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a set of late-19th century embalming tools and two men posing next to two or three different horse-drawn carriages. Image 6 shows embalming tools inside of a briefcase-style carrying case. A label next to this kit reads "Embalming kit for making 'house calls' and cooling board used by William R. Whiteside in the 1890's in Olympia." Image 7 shows two men standing next to a horse-drawn carriage. The man on the right (Tim Burgman) is wearing a short-sleeved collared shirt and a wide, short patterned tie. The man on the left is wearing a long-sleeved collared shirt. The man on the left appears to be younger than Mr. Burgman. A small sign is partially visible behind the carriage's wheel. This sign appears to read "186[?] FUNERAL COACH By Lacey Funeral Home." Image 8 shows only the younger of the two men posing next to a different carriage than the one seen in the previous image. This carriage appears to have glass sides, and appears to be meant to carry a body for display. Image 9 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 10 shows Tim Burgman posing on the opposite side of the same carriage seen in the previous two images. Image 11 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 12 shows a carriage with no one standing next to it. The side of the carriage reads "The Royal Coach." Image 13 is nearly identical to image 12. Image 14 shows several people standing next to and looking at the carriage seen in the previous two images.
