TIN-0067.1Description
Women at Dynamite Plant, 1933 or '34. This image shows three women and one man working in one of the buildings of the J.A. Denn Powder Company in Hawks Prairie near Lacey, Washington in either 1933 or 1934. The walls and floor of the room are wood, and the wall visible at the right-hand side of the image has three large windows in it. These windows open by tipping inward with a hinge at the bottom. The two windows nearest to the camera are open. Along the wall at the rear of the image are several large wooden cabinets. The cabinet door at the far right of this row of cabinets is open, and visible inside are ten flat, wide boxes. Seven smaller cube-shaped boxes are on top of this row of cabinets. Near the center of the image is a long, short wooden table around which the three women are working. Visible on the table is a large weight scale and two boxes filled with dynamite cylinders. Two of the women are standing immediately next to this table, on the opposite side of the table as the camera. Both of these women are blurred from movement when the image was captured. The closer of these women to the camera is wearing glasses. A third woman is standing on the opposite side of the table from the other two women. She is holding five sticks of dynamite in her hands, and she is wearing a brimless hat or a headband. This woman is standing next to a large wooden box or trunk which is being used as a work surface. On top of this box is a second weight scale and a wooden box. Several other boxes are visible to the left of this woman. All three of the women are wearing aprons and are looking toward the camera. The man is standing in front of the wooden cabinets in the background of the image next to the left-hand edge of the image frame. The man is blurred, and he is wearing coveralls over a long-sleeved shirt. He appears to be wearing a hat.
The reverse side of this image is blank.
The J.A. Denn Powder Company was owned by Joseph A. Denn, with its headquarters located in Portland, Oregon. The Hawk's Prairie dynamite plant was built in 1933. On June 27, 1934, two consecutive explosions occurred at the plant, killing ten and leveling all but two of the eight buildings which made up the plant. One additional person died from their injuries the following day. The specifc cause of the explosions remains a mystery. ("Explosions at the J. A.
