TIN-0067.5Description
Office with Windows Blown Out, 1934. This image was captured at what remained of the J.A. Denn Powder Company dynamite plant following two explosions which occurred on July 27, 1934. The image shows a single-storey, rectangular building from the front side. The front side of the office appears to be approximately 30 feet in length. The front door is at the center of the front of the office, and this door is open. Foliage is visible through the open door, suggesting that either a back door of the office is also open or a portion of the backside of the building was blown off or collapsed by the explosions. There are two square windows on either side of the front door. The second and fourth windows from the left have their window frames hanging out of the front of the office. The wall on the right-hand side of the office has partially collapsed, and the bottom portion of this wall is visible at the right-hand side of the building. Fence posts are visible to the left and right of the office, and large evergreen trees make up the background of the image. A small portion of the roof and one wall of a second building are visible at the right-hand edge of the image. A rope is crossing the image frame horizontally slightly below the center of the image.
Written on the reverse side of this photograph is "this is the ofice Side vue With all the winders Blue out," "Wm F. Ulery, Lacey, Wash." and "Ruth Southwick."
The J.A. Denn Powder Company was owned by Joseph A. Denn, with its headquarters located in Portland, Oregon. The Hawk's Prairie dynamite plant was built in 1933. On June 27, 1934, two consecutive explosions occurred at the plant, killing ten and leveling all but two of the eight buildings which made up the plant. One additional person died from their injuries the following day. The specifc cause of the explosions remains a mystery. ("Explosions at the J. A.
