Description

Gallagher House, c. 1986. This color photograph shows six or seven people doing landscaping work along the front of the Gallagher House and the adjacent shed. A tall deciduous tree is visible in the left-hand half of the image. This tree extends beyond the top edge of the photo. A man wearing a blue and white baseball-style cap, white shirt and blue jeans is visible to the left of this tree. He is holding the long wooden handle of a rake or other landscaping tool in his right hand. To the left of this man is a boy in a red plaid shirt and blue jeans. He is also holding a long-handled landscaping implement. A group of three people are standing in a circle and talking in front of the house. Only two of these people are mostly visible, as the other people in the circle are almost completely obscured. The mostly visible person on the left is wearing a light blue t-shirt and jeans and the mostly visible person on the right is wearing a dark blue t-shirt and jeans. The person in the dark blue shirt is holding a long-handled landscaping implement. Two wheelbarrows are parked near this group. Freshly-turned earth is spread around the area in front of the house and shed, and some of this earth is in piles. An area of grassy lawn occupies the area between the bottom edge of the image and the freshly-turned earth. A white church is visible in the background near the left-hand edge of the image. A white house is partially visible in the background immediately to the left of the shed. A bush is growing in front of the shed. A no trespassing sign is hanging on the porch column to the right of the porch stairs. The reverse side of this photograph is blank aside from the accession number in the lower-right corner. The Gallagher House was built in either late 1896 or early 1897 at what later became the intersection of Carpenter Road and Pacific Avenue in Lacey, Washington, most likely by William B. Chamberlin. By 1900, the home had been repossessed by Alameda Rowe, the original owner of the land on which the home was built. Rowe turned the house and the adjoining property over to relatives in 1902, who then sold the house and property to Cornelius and Anna Gallagher in 1908. The Gallaghers lived in the home until Cornelius passed away in 1950. The house then changed hands to Harold and Millie Crass, who then sold it to Abner and Hazel Hukee in 1959. In 1985, the house was donated to the Lacey Historical Society, who moved the house to a piece of property adjacent to the Lacey Museum on Lacey Street. The house was subsequently rented out by the Lacey Historical Society until it was sold to a private buyer in 2018.
