Description

Gallagher House Porch, c. 1986. This color photograph shows seven people congregating on the front porch of the Gallagher House. The person nearest to the camera is a tall man near the right-hand edge of the photo. He has dark hair and is wearing glasses, a dark blue sweater over a white dress shirt and tan or off-white pants. He is holding a can of what appears to be Coca Cola in his hands. Only the left-hand side of his head is visible. Visible to the left of the first man is another man with white hair and sideburns wearing sunglasses, a red tie, white dress shirt, gray blazer and black or navy blue slacks. He is holding what appears to be a disposable coffee cup in his left hand. This man is facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame, and is shown in profile. Visible to the left of this second man is a woman with curled brown hair wearing glasses, a pink cardigan over a pink blouse, and a light purple skirt. She is holding a black purse with a white bow-shaped decoration on it. This woman is sticking her tongue out slightly. She is facing toward the left-hand edge of the image frame and is shown in profile. Several feet to the left of this woman is a second woman with gray, shoulder-length hair wearing a white blazer and light blue pants. This woman is standing with her arms folded and she is facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. She is speaking to a boy in a Boy Scout uniform to the woman's right. This boy is at the left-hand edge of this image, and he is looking down at something in his hands. His back is toward the camera. Two people with dark hair and light-colored clothing are partially visible in the background. The reverse side of this photograph is blank aside from the accession number in the lower-right corner. The Gallagher House was built in either late 1896 or early 1897 at what later became the intersection of Carpenter Road and Pacific Avenue in Lacey, Washington, most likely by William B. Chamberlin. By 1900, the home had been repossessed by Alameda Rowe, the original owner of the land on which the home was built. Rowe turned the house and the adjoining property over to relatives in 1902, who then sold the house and property to Cornelius and Anna Gallagher in 1908. The Gallaghers lived in the home until Cornelius passed away in 1950. The house then changed hands to Harold and Millie Crass, who then sold it to Abner and Hazel Hukee in 1959. In 1985, the house was donated to the Lacey Historical Society, who moved the house to a piece of property adjacent to the Lacey Museum on Lacey Street. The house was subsequently rented out by the Lacey Historical Society until it was sold to a private buyer in 2018.
